I was born in Milan at the “Ospedale Maggiore, Niguarda”. To guarantee that my mother be assisted by one of the most prominent doctors of the time, my father decided to sell the watch he had received as a gift from his father.
In time, naturally, that watch was replaced with others by my mother. The subsequent watches were probably even more valuable, but it is my father’s gesture that says so much about the kind of love he had for my mother “La Lina”.
It was a love devoid of sentimentality, constant, ever-present and unchangeable, a love extended to my sister and myself permeating my entire life. A love matched by his kindness and the grace of his soul. In my very early years I remember the sliver of light coming from the parlor, through the slightly open doors, fused with the sound of music. At times it was my father playing the piano, others it was an evening concert being broadcast on the radio.
I have lived a very sheltered and rather solitary life: I had mainly my sister as a playmate and later a tiny poodle, inherited as a “result” of my father’s friendship with Lucio Fontana. The poodle died shortly after delivering a litter of pups in our home.
